Who, What, When, Where, Why, How?

Who: CI campus events such as Relay For Life; Emilee Grochowski.

What: Dance/Movement Therapy workshop.

When: Relay for Life; March 31st; Workshops starting at 7pm, 9pm, and 10pm.

Where: CI campus.

Why: Dance and movement are ways to express one’s emotions without verbalization. College communities are susceptible to stress, anxiety, and depression and my workshop is designed around using dance and movement to find a connection between the body and mind to enter a state of equilibrium. This has been proven within other vulnerable populations and studies, but I am looking forward to conducting my own workshop and seeing if my research supports my findings. I hope to gain insight on how this type of a workshop can be presented at various events and discover how the experience varies within different people within the same community.

How: By researching different dance forms and techniques, such as Laban, Graham, Wigman, and Bartenieff, I plan create a workshop to hold at multiple Wellness and on-campus events, including Relay for Life, to provide the CI community an opportunity to find this connection. The workshops would not focus on the quality of the dancing, but on the depth of emotional and physical relationships, along with the idea that anyone can use these movement techniques as another form of expression and self-awareness.

Documentation: Jenny; Videotaping.

Class participants: My entire class, including my professors, participated in a “Mock Workshop” with me.
